Biography

Angad is an associate in Lawson Lundell’s Calgary office and a member of the firm’s Insolvency & Restructuring Group. His practice focuses on both insolvency and restructuring proceedings and civil litigation. He has acted for both debtors and creditors in various insolvency proceedings. Angad’s civil litigation experience includes acting for clients in complex commercial litigation, fraud litigation, shareholder disputes and oppression matters, real estate litigation, construction disputes and more. He has extensive experience in obtaining, defending and setting aside Mareva Injunctions and Attachment Orders. Angad has dealt with complex files involving hundreds of thousands of documents, and has led teams through AI assisted review processes using e-discovery technology.

Angad has represented clients before the Alberta Court of Justice, the Alberta Court of King’s Bench, the Alberta Court of Appeal, and various and various Administrative Tribunals.

Before commencing his career as a lawyer, Angad completed an internship at the International Criminal Court in the Hague, serving within the Immediate Office of the Registrar — the group supporting one of the Court’s three elected principals and head of its largest organ. Angad received most of his work from the Register’s Chief of Staff. During his internship, Angad engaged in a diverse range of tasks including providing support for internal and external negotiations and consultations; assisting with the proposed programme budget of the Court for 2020 and the implementation of the 2019 budget; helping organize and publish the Court's internal legal framework; working with the procurement review committee; and working with external consultants to analyze and review the Court's disciplinary and administrative legal frameworks. Additionally, Angad drafted speaking points, speeches, memos and other documents, as well as note verbales and letters to embassies and other parties.

Angad has acted for:

  • Petrolama Energy Canada Inc. in its BIA proposal proceedings.
  • A major oil & gas company in determining its contractual rights and remedies if a counterparty were to go insolvent.
  • A secured creditor in the Receivership of a various related residential real estate development companies.
  • A grocery store in the negotiation a forbearance agreement its primary creditor.

Litigation & Dispute Resolution

Angad has acted for:

  • An oil and gas company in a dispute involving the fraudulent misappropriation of over $40 million dollars.
  • A seller company in a dispute stemming from the failure of a purchaser to close a transaction involving merger and acquisition with a purchase price exceeding $100 million dollars.
  • A foreign investor in a dispute concerning the fraudulent misappropriation of over $60 million dollars from the subsidiaries it purchased by former directors of those subsidiaries.
  • A minority shareholder in an encrypted communications company in a shareholder oppression matter related to improper share transfers and the stripping of company assets by directors.
  • A foreign cryptocurrency company in a dispute over the unjustified enrichment and breach of contract by a Canadian counterparty.
  • An engineering company in a professional negligence matter related to the collapse of an oil rig.
  • Various claimants in shareholder oppression matters.
  • Various lawyers in professional negligence matters.
  • Various owners and contractors in real estate litigation and construction disputes.
