The CBC Interviews Ryan Berger on Potential Legislation for Data Privacy Breaches

CBC News interviewed Ryan Berger, partner at Lawson Lundell, on the Liberal government’s plan to enact legislation that will ensure compensation for privacy breach victims. Although there is no date for when the legislation will come into effect, the compensation will be introduced as part of a broader ‘digital charter’ that will establish a new set of online rights.

Ryan, who specialises in privacy and data management, commented on the impact this will have on private companies. “It will incentivize organizations ... to take steps to protect that information and ensure that, for instance, health information is encrypted," he said. "So right now, there aren't the sorts of financial implications for them if they fail to do that."
