On Thursday, June 5, Lawson Lundell’s Labour, Employment & Human Rights Group hosted its annual Labour & Employment Seminar. Held at the Paradox Hotel in Vancouver, the seminar featured four presentations exploring the latest legal developments, emerging trends, and provided practical guidance in the world of labour and employment law.
Seminar 1: No One Mourns the Wicked: Avoiding Pitfalls in Terminations
Presented by Deborah Cushing, Dana Kiefer, Nicole Skuggedal and Lucy Williams
This seminar encompassed how an employer can create a plan for workforce changes, what unique scenarios can alter an employer’s plan, how to best structure termination packages, and the most common pitfalls and mistakes to avoid.
Seminar 2: Labour Law and Layoffs during the Time of Tariffs
Presented by Katy Allen and Rob Sider, KC
This seminar covered individual and group layoffs, section 54 of the Labour relations Code, bumping and seniority rights, and the Canada Workshare Program.
Seminar 3: Hot Topics in Workplace Privacy
Presented by Ryan Berger and Chris Wiebe
This seminar discussed the use of AI solutions in privacy, recordings in the workplace, employee secret recordings and electronic meetings, video surveillance, and sick notes.
Seminar 4: Prohibited Action Complaints: Proceed with Caution!
Presented by Michelle Jones and Miny Atwal
This seminar legal tests and remedies for prohibited action complaints (PAC), mediation and adjudication processes, regulatory consequences, and practical tips for avoiding a PAC.
