1. The Rundown on Employment Law

Come and learn about the most significant issues and decisions in employment law from the past year. Some of the topics that we will examine include our regular review of reasonable notice and damage in wrongful dismissal actions as well as topics such as restrictive covenants and effective termination provisions.

2. Latest Developments in Labour Relations (Unionized Employers)

Can you terminate the employment of a unionized employee who is off work on sick leave?  Are criminal charges enough to warrant an unpaid suspension?  Is the threat of violence just cause for termination?  What can you do about an employee you suspect is abusing sick leave?  We’ll provide an update for unionized employers on what has happened over the past year in the labour relations field, with a focus on answers to these questions and more.

3. Human Rights and Privacy Update

Can you engage in surveillance of your workforce?  At what point can you stop responding to employee requests for access to personal information?  When is it acceptable to conduct criminal record checks?  Find out when we summarize the decisions and reports issued by the federal and provincial privacy commissioners over the past year.  In addition, we will provide an update on the recent cases and developments in human rights with a focus on accommodating mental disabilities and the evolving definition of family status in light of a May 2014 decision from the Federal Court of Appeal.
