Tim Syer’s Insight Featured in Cabin Radio Article on the GNWT's New Indigenous Business Procurement Definition

Lawson Lundell partner Tim Syer was recently featured in Cabin Radio for his timely analysis of the Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) newly updated definition of an Indigenous business for procurement reporting.

The territorial government's update comes after five years of review. In his analysis, Tim described the new framework as a "sensible and low-risk" approach, highlighting that the territory is streamlining the administrative process by relying on established federal and modern treaty partner registries.

While the GNWT has stated that this change is currently for data tracking and reporting purposes only, Tim counsels northern businesses to look ahead.

Official tracking begins in the 2026-27 fiscal year, and the data it generates will likely form the foundation for a formal policy down the road.
