Partner Craig Ferris, KC, FCIArb., Speaks at Supreme Court of Canada’s Opening of the Judicial Year
Lawson Lundell is proud to share that partner Craig Ferris, KC, FCIArb., current President of The Advocates' Society, was one of five featured speakers at the Supreme Court of Canada’s Ceremonial Opening of the Judicial Year in Ottawa on Monday, October 5, 2026.
The ceremonial opening marked the start of the new judicial session, offering a moment for leaders across Canada’s legal community to reflect on issues facing the justice system.
Held at the Court's temporary home in the West Memorial Building, the ceremony featured opening remarks from Chief Justice Richard Wagner, who highlighted the vital role of democratic and legal institutions as an anchor during times of rapid technological change, global pressures and political polarization.
Originally revived to mark its landmark 150th anniversary, the Supreme Court returned to this tradition last year for the first time since the mid-1980s.
Craig was the final speaker of the ceremony. In his address, Craig cautioned that key functions of Canada’s justice system face growing pressure from those seeking to undermine foundational legal structures, stressing that “democracy, in any real sense, cannot exist without the rule of law.”
He called on all legal professionals to actively defend constitutional principles both inside and outside the courtroom, emphasizing that those working within the justice system have a responsibility to better educate the broader public on the importance of the rule of law and how it is a pillar of Canadian society.
“The role of this court, and indeed all of us who work within the justice system, is more important now than ever," Craig said.
"We’re bound to work together to defend the principles that animate Canada’s constitutional democracy and we must do more than simply uphold these principles in our courts.”
Lawson Lundell congratulates Craig on participating in this national event.
