Emma Russell

Emma practices in the firm’s Environmental & Regulatory Group, advising clients on a wide range of issues including environmental compliance and permitting, contaminated sites and reclamation, the regulation of public utilities, regulatory prosecutions, administrative monetary penalties, economic development on reserve lands, and the duty to consult.

She has a particular interest in constitutional law and the intersection between federal, provincial, and Indigenous jurisdiction in environmental decision-making. Emma has represented clients before all levels of court in British Columbia and at various administrative bodies, including the BC Utilities Commission and Environmental Appeal Board, and has experience in the Northwest Territories. Emma was called to the Bar of Nunavut in April 2025.

Emma is the Co-Chair of the CBABC’s Environmental Law section and sits on the board of the Federation of Canadian Artists. She is also an active volunteer with Access Pro Bono.

Emma earned her Juris Doctor from the University of British Columbia in 2020. During law school, she served as a clinician with the UBC Innocence Project, competed in various moots, and worked as a research assistant for a former judge exploring legal solutions to online hate speech. After law school, Emma clerked for three justices of the Court of Appeal for British Columbia and Yukon. Prior to joining Lawson Lundell, she practiced at the Vancouver office of an international law firm.
