Lawson Lundell remembers David J. Smith

29.8.12

We are saddened to mark the death of our former partner David Smith on August 9, 2012.  David was a superb lawyer, partner and colleague, and Lawson Lundell was fortunate to have him spend the entire 47 years of his private practice career with our firm.  His extensive knowledge of mergers and acquisitions and securities laws, combined with his excellent judgment and gracious personality, made him the counsel of choice for many of British Columbia’s most prominent public companies and investment banks throughout his career.  Many boards of directors and special committees also benefitted from his corporate governance expertise.  In further recognition of his securities law expertise, David served as a commissioner of the British Columbia Securities Commission in recent years.

David was one of the builders of Lawson Lundell as it exists today.  As one of the core partners in our corporate commercial practice group, he set the highest standards of professionalism, integrity and service to our clients.   He served as Managing Partner from 1968 to 1973 and as Chair of the Executive Committee from 1986 through 1992.  He was also integral to the establishment of our Calgary office, relocating to that city for several years.  He was a mentor to many and welcoming and friendly to all that met him or worked with him both inside and outside the firm.  He leaves a tremendous legacy for Lawson Lundell.
