Privacy & Freedom of Information

Members of our Protection of Privacy and Freedom of Information Group provide advice to both private and public sector clients regarding access to personal information requests, dealing with privacy requests that arise in the course of corporate transactions or employee matters.

We draft access requests for our clients for information held by public sector organizations. We advise third parties on access to information requests which affect their business interests or confidential information and where appropriate prepare objections to disclosure on their behalf.

Members of our group draft and revise privacy policies specific to an organization’s needs and responsibilities and advise on compliance with privacy legislation including responses to requests for access to personal information and all aspects of electronic commerce.

Members of our group have been involved in the following:

• Drafting internet privacy policies for major retailers and real estate companies
• Disputing release of commercial information for a fishery company, a municipality and a defense contractor
• Drafting contracts with third party service providers for energy companies
• Advising on cross-border release of personal information held by a call centre
• Advising a utility on cross-border release of personal information in U.S. based litigation
