Tax law has been a significant practice area at Lawson Lundell for more than 25 years. Members of this group have extensive experience in all areas of tax law including Income Tax and Goods and Services Tax. In addition, we provide expert advice in relation to corporate and personal tax planning, dispute resolution, provincial tax laws such as Social Service Tax (i.e. sales tax), Corporation Capital Tax, Mining Tax, Logging Tax and Property Transfer Tax. Members of our group have extensive experience advising large public corporations as well as planning the affairs of privately held businesses including advising on tax efficient structures and business succession.
We monitor developments in federal and provincial tax legislation and policy that affect our clients and endeavour to keep them informed about significant changes.
Examples of recent transactions include:
structuring income funds using commercial trusts the units of which are issued to the public;
advising large corporations in the resource sector on acquisitions, mergers and divestitures;
providing tax services to a partnership establishing an independent power project in British Columbia including complex cross-border issues;
advising large pension funds on international tax aspects of investments;
advising a large American mining company with significant operations in Canada on the tax aspects of their Canadian operations;
designing a plan for the division of assets of a multinational corporation among corporate shareholders on a tax-free basis;
designing a structure for business operations in Canada of a large foreign multinational corporation and advising on tax effective cross-border financing techniques.
