Lawson Lundell’s Forest Industry Law Group works with regional and global forest products and timber companies. We have specific expertise in every aspect of the forestry industry and forest resource, including mergers and acquisitions involving forest industry operations, joint ventures, environmental compliance and Forest Practices Code issues, aboriginal relations issues, fibre supply arrangements, forest tenure issues as well as day-to-day operating concerns in the industry. Members of the group have extensive experience in public offerings, take-over bids and other combinations involving publicly held forest companies, the purchase and sale of forest industry assets and operations, public and private financing, and a variety of commercial contracts specific to the forest industry.

Members of the Forest Industry Law Group have expertise and extensive experience in forest tenure and private timberland issues, forest tenure transfer requirements and procedures, fibre supply arrangements and contractual documents, timber harvesting contracts and related regulatory requirements, stumpage appeals and day-to-day operating issues. Members of the group have broad experience in the complex environmental issues affecting the forest industry, including the establishment of environmental systems, securing permits required for major projects and defending federal and provincial administrative proceedings and prosecutions, including those instituted under the Fisheries Act, Forest Practices Code, and Waste Management Act.

Examples of our work include:

  • aquisition of an integrated pulp, paper and wood products business;

  • acquisition of a global paper business ;

  • purchases and/or sales of various pulp and paper mills and wood products operations in British Columbia; and

  • establishment of a joint venture for the development and operation of an oriented strandboard (OSB) manufacturing facility and related fibre supply arrangements.
