Sarah has a diverse litigation practice from our Yellowknife office with an emphasis on commercial litigation, creditors’ remedies, and labour and employment issues. She has a substantial interest in parliamentary law and is presently the Deputy Law Clerk to the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories. She also practices child protection law. Sarah has advanced training both in mediation and as a collaborative law lawyer.

Sarah has appeared before the Supreme, Territorial Court and Court of Appeal of the Northwest Territories. She has also appeared before a number of quasi-judicial boards and tribunals. Sarah is familiar with and often works with the Land Claims Agreements in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

Since being called to the bar, Sarah has been involved in a number of complex, multi-party pieces of litigation in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

Experience

  • Significant experience in representing the Director of Child & Family Services in child protection matters throughout the Northwest Territories
  • Served as Deputy Law Clerk from 1997 to 2000 involved in the bills dealing with the division of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut and reappointed as Deputy Law Clerk in 2008
  • Local counsel for two major financial institutions with respect to security realization and creditor remedies
  • Appointed as an Investigator pursuant to the Government of the Northwest Territories’ Workplace Conflict Resolution Policy
  • Advised clients with respect to procedures, investigations and complaints pursuant to the Canada Elections Act
  • Appointed as a Fair Practices Officer for Nunavut with respect to a complaint of institutional discrimination
  • Counsel to a Senior Public Servant before the Special Committee of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories on Conflict of Interest as well as providing advice and assistance to MLAs in other conflict of interest matters
  • Lead counsel in a case dealing with the implications of aboriginal custom adoption under the Aboriginal Custom Adoption Recognition Act on child support obligations
  • Acted as counsel in the defense of various regulatory offenses pursuant to the Liquor Act, Wildlife Act, Public Health Act & Regulations, Employment Insurance Act
